In space no one can hear you…laugh.

Zombie Joe's Underground Theatre in North Hollywood is well known for pushing the boundaries in their mini-productions, so it’s no surprise, really, that they’d eventually set their deranged and outrageous sights on the furthest one: outer space. I’m talking deep space, way beyond Uranus in Dark-Dark Ride-Ride.
If you thought this was going to be a mere parody of Disney’s Space Mountain, think again. A very-adult, very twisted, and quite edgy speed-trip through the cosmos courtesy of a group of creatives who literally put the moons of Jupiter within reach is on the ticket.
The premise is perfect: you’ll be pulled into the theatre on Lankershim and guided by a friendly alien into your own doombuggie — think intergalactic traveling machine inspired by earthly Tuk-Tuks. As darkness envelops you, the cackling voices of mysterious beings surround your transport before your extra-conversational extraterrestrial whirls you into position for take-off.
The journey through Andromeda and beyond will expose you to every lurid National Enquirer alien encounter you’ve ever read, and more. Performance-art creatures from deep beyond, covered in neon glow, appear out of the blackness at various stops along the warp-speed experience to taunt you, tease you, and threaten you. There are intergalactic strippers, transforming beings in various stages of contortion, a space cabaret where Broadway singalongs are all the rage, and even an opportunity to grab a space handgun and blow away several abducted-minded alien attackers in an energizing video game come to life. And, yes, this being ZJU, there’s plenty of alien skin. Did I see what I thought I saw? Your alien guide will soon have you on your way before your brain can fully compute.
Ribald, edgy, and proudly entertaining for all the wrong reasons, Dark-Dark Ride-Ride will mostly appeal to open-minded adults hungry for envelope-pushing immersive experiences and unfazed by the occasional toe over the line. It’s a space-quickie – wham, bam, thank you spaceman — 20-minute-or-so up-close interactive rip through the galaxies, and when they deposit you back on mother earth, aka, North Hollywood, your head may be spinning for a few minutes, but you’ll have fully learned what it means to be in the hands and minds of L.A.’s undisputed leaders of exhibitionist theatre of the absurd. No fast pass needed.
