The Garden Room at NEONIKA

Some events are just special, and NEONIKA belongs on that short list. 

East of Alameda in downtown Los Angeles has become ground-zero for the sub-genre of entertainment where warehouses transform into creative labs of art and immersion.  Where else in the city center can an urban creative find virtually limitless space to create and build out their interactive canvas? 

It’s here that one of the most pleasant and bold surprises of the ware-art world is currently running: NEONIKA.  To call it an art installation barely captures its full breadth, and to define it as an arty play zone undersells its magnitude and grace.  It’s both, but also something more, much more, and deeply satisfying as a joyful, even, spiritual experience.  Call it light therapy meets interactive, meets emotion, meets technology, but do call on it.

You expect neon, and you certainly get it, but the noble gas glow almost becomes an afterthought the deeper you move through the seven humungous rooms.  The vibrant luminance is everywhere for sure, but it’s just one aspect of a bolder artistic statement in this rooms-as-interactive art experience.  The opening angel and robot neon sculptures serve as an intriguing appetizer, but soon you’re moving through a series of elaborately designed spaces that enchant — and invite you to stay for as long as you’d like to soak it all in, to immerse your soul.  Cushy seating in every room quietly says: sit back, stretch out, take your time, and appreciate the full power of creativity on display. 

Neon robot down. Call the ship.

After the brief introductory exhibit of neon-charged angels and robots, you enter the first living environment: the Light Room. and know that this is where the experience truly begins: the Light Room.  Its already impressive size is amplified by floor and walled mirrors that stretch the space to infinity. Here you get your first full taste of the magic to come.  A beautifully coordinated light show plays across large rectangular floor-to-ceiling art installations, shifting in color and design with the heavenly music that fills the space.  This one room alone deserves plaudits as a standalone, but there’s much more to yet to see. 

Next is the Music Room, where brightly colored rubber hanging tubes invite you to tap out sound effects and beats that blend with the ongoing soundtrack.  It’s art and music combined in clever fashion, and you too are creating a unique composition all your own.  A drum circle for the digital age. 

The Garden Room follows, an otherworldly neon-infused interpretation of perhaps Central Park or Luxembourg Gardens or any of the great green spaces of the world.  Here, the greenery is created by floor-covering lighting giving the effect of nature in space.  From the ceiling come long, wispy strands of lights that evoke images of rain spilling on the plants below.  It’s quite beautiful and demands that you drop down on a conveniently placed squishy chair and soak it all in.  If you haven’t gotten into a Zen-state yet, then the next room will get you there. 

The World of Sleep beckons you to doze in a voluminous space filled with relaxing music, hypnotic floating neon orbs and giant teddy bears to use as your oversized pillows.  While most were in groups chatting and enjoying it all, I saw at least two guests in what appeared to be full sleep mode. 

Can I get a glass of milk please?

Then The Experience calls, where you immediately get recharged by jumping into an immense ball pit on steroids.  Tens of thousands of white, squishy balls (promo material says a half million) draw you into the pit in a way that feels like going in the shallow end of an elaborate swimming pool without limits.  Lying submerged beneath the plastic balls is very satisfying. 

The last place you’ll visit at NEONIKA is the Pink Room, think Barbie’s den.  Pink walls, pink floors, pink clothing to try on and pink gadgets throughout combine with a loud pop-rock soundtrack to get you reenergized for the world outside, which is your inevitable next stop, even if you’d like to do the full loop around this memorable artistic achievement once more.
